During the hot summer months, who doesn't want to cool off in Lake Michigan or in the local pool? When you're pregnant, spending time in water is also beneficial for you and your baby!
Hi, I'm Mel Haley the doula, childbirth educator, and placenta encapsulator behind Wyld Garden. I am also a water-loving, scuba-diving Pisces, so I am stoked to be talking about swimming during pregnancy today!
Is it safe to swim in pregnancy?
Yes! Especially if you are already a swimmer, you can continue with your regular swimming routine as long as you aren't trying to break personal records or add significantly more to your workout. If you are not a regular swimmer, you can start small and work your way up. The general rule for working out while pregnant is to never go so hard that you can't talk. Always stop if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or notice cramping. Be careful not to slip and drink plenty of water. And no belly flops.
If you are new to swimming, look for classes like water aerobics at your local gym. Usually doctors will say no new exercise during pregnancy, but swimming is low-key, so this is one that you can start!
Swimming is a low-impact sport which can help you get your exercise in without taxing your body while it is already working hard. Swimming is gentle on your body, allowing you to work up a sweat without hurting your ankles. Plus, labor is an endurance sport all on its own, so preparing by keeping your body active is a very good idea. Sometimes when I go to the pool to swim I spend time alternating between laps and just gently floating down the lane on my back.
Just getting into the water is helpful! Because water applies even pressure on your entire body swimming can help with swelling and water retention. Increased circulation can help alleviate sciatic pain, too. Because you are weightless in the water, you get a lot of relief! The water takes the weight off your lower back and your joints. Go float.
I've read that swimming can even help breech babies turn. Because the weightless takes pressure off your body, it might also make room for baby to make their way head down. There's no date on this, but if you've got a breech baby, try submerging in water!
There are so many benefits to swimming while pregnant, not to mention the fact that you might get to feel like a beautiful mermaid or water goddess for a little while. Get your Venus on and get in the water.
What should I wear?
Whatever you are comfortable in! Most swimmers enjoy a one-piece swimsuit option, and you might too for the extra belly support. If you are going to swim out in the sun, make sure you wear SPF and all that jazz.
If you love being in the water or are a swimmer, there are amazing ways to bring water into your pregnancy and birth!
- Do a water submerged photoshoot during pregnancy; have you seen Erin's sunrise photography? It is so beautiful! Plus, everyone looks better artfully draped in a swirling robe.
- Give birth in water using a birth tub or pool at home or at a birth center; water is also good pain relief in labor and sometimes called the "midwife's epidural."
